Washington Online Masters
Washington, constituent state of the United States of America. Lying at the northwestern corner of the 48 conterminous states, it is bounded by the Canadian province of British Columbia to the north, the U.S. states of Idaho to the east and Oregon to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The capital is Olympia, located at the southern end of Puget Sound in the western part of the state. The state’s coastal location and excellent harbors give it a leading role in trade with Alaska, Canada, and countries of the Pacific Rim. Washington cities have sister cities in several countries, and their professional and trade associations commonly include Canadian members.

Education in Washington
Higher education is predominantly a state function, the largest institution being the University of Washington in Seattle (1861), with branch campuses at Bothell and Tacoma. Washington State University at Pullman was founded in 1890 as a land-grant college for agricultural and mechanical arts; it has branch campuses at Spokane, Vancouver, and Richland. Three state colleges—at Bellingham (1893), Ellensburg (1890), and Cheney (1889)—evolved from small teacher-training institutions to university status, becoming Western Washington University, Central Washington University, and Eastern Washington University, respectively, in 1977. Evergreen State College at Olympia was added to the state system in 1971. A system of community colleges was combined under state administration in 1967 and now numbers more than 30 institutions. The state is also home to many private institutions, several of which are denominational. They include Whitman College (1882) in Walla Walla, the University of Puget Sound (1888) in Tacoma, Gonzaga University (1887) in Spokane, and Seattle University (1891).

WGU is a nonprofit, online university that was founded by 19 U.S. governors. However, WGU is a private university, not a state university. WGU developed out of a vision for the future of higher education that emerged among the governors of the Western Governors Association (hence the name), but WGU operates independently with its governance structure. This allows it to keep its focus on students, following the vision that got it started.
Western Governors University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), an institutional accreditation body of colleges and universities in a seven-state region that includes WGU’s headquarters in Utah. WGU also has the distinction of being the only university to have received regional accreditation from four regional accrediting commissions at the same time.
